On May 12, 2020 Heike Messemer’s doctoral dissertation „Digitale 3D-Modelle historischer Architektur – Entwicklung, Potentiale und Analyse eines neuen Bildmediums aus kunsthistorischer Perspektive“ was published by arthistoricum.net in Heidelberg.
The book offers for the first time a wide and thorough overview of the genesis of digital 3D reconstructions of historical architecture from an art historical perspective. It focuses on the various potentials of the new medium of 3D reconstructions for research and gives detailed insight into important projects of 3D models of historical architecture from the 1980s until the 2010s. Essential questions and needs of action in the areas of visualization of hypotheses, long-term archiving and documentation of the reconstruction process are discussed. For the scientific community this book serves as a sound basis to contextualize digital 3D models of historical architecture in the field of research questions, important needs for action and initiating future projects.

Heike Messemer studied art history, theatre studies and ethnology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich and received her doctorate at the Institute of Art History at LMU under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Stephan Hoppe and Prof. Dr. Hubertus Kohle. Since 2018 she is working as a postdoc in the BMBF funded junior research group UrbanHistory4D at the Institute of Art History at University of Würzburg and since 2020 also at the Media Center of TU Dresden.
